I have a disability called Cerebral Palsy and decided to set up Laura's Wish after I had an operation in December 2010 to improve my mobility and help me to stand and walk. Following my operation I received very little help from the NHS service. Just 45 minutes physiotherapy treatment per week. Any other treatment needed has to be self funded as it is now classes as maintenence which I was told there is no money within the NHS to provide. There is very little help available for young people when they are signed off from children's services, which in my case was at the age of 16. This leaves many young people and adults feeling worthless and forgotten. I had wanted this operation since the age of 11 and was 30 by the time it was carried out. After being in a wheelchair all my life I didn't want the operation and my chance wasted. For this reason I looked into treatments for myself.
On 25th February 2011 I decided to attend a private neuro physio clinic in Manchester. Over the past 3 months I have made great progress and have now started to not only stand but to walk with a frame and I am still improving week by week.
After seeing the difference it has made to my life in as little as 3 months I want neuro physio to be made available for all those who need it. Laura's wish was origionally going to be designed to help adults and young people post 16, but after hearing that children as young as 6 were being told there is nthing more the hospitals can do for them, I decided to make Laura's wish available to all those who need it. Laura's wish will aim to provide neuro physio and mobility equipment to allow users of the charity to reach their full abilities.
